Menurut Pusat Penelitian dan Pengembangan Teknologi Ketenagalistrikan, Energi Baru, Terbarukan, dan Konservasi Energi (Puslitbangtek Ketenagalistrikan, EBT dan KE) potensi energi panas bumi Indonesia adalah yang terbesar di dunia, yaitu sekitar 40 persen atau 29GW namun yang dimanfaatkan baru sekitar 1,3GW.
